Records include: annual reports (1965-1992); documents relating to the budget, curriculum, assistantships, comprehensive examinations and the Student-Alumni Association; correspondence of the various deans and directors (1963-1995); agenda and minutes of faculty meetings (1964-1980); agenda, minutes and intra-committee correspondence of the department's standing and ad hoc committees; personnel records of department faculty and staff, including information on hire and release dates, annual reviews, some curriculum vitae, material on promotion and tenure, and faculty publications (1963-1994). Of particular interest is the series on accreditation (1960-1994) which includes correspondence and rules and regulations of the various accrediting bodies as well as surveys, annual reports, self-studies and consultations, all of which chronicle the School's first accreditation by the American Library Association in 1971 and each subsequent loss and reaccreditation.

The University of Rhode Island was chartered as the state's agricultural school in 1888. It became the Rhode Island College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts in 1892 and the first class was graduated two years later.
